Summary
CardBASE provided its MASCOT card management solution as part of an innovative smart card programme for Bracknell Forest Borough Council (BFBC).
MASCOT has enabled BFBC to expand its existing smart card programme from a basic library card to a multi-function, multi-application e+ card to provide access to a range of other council services.
The BFBC smart card management solution is recognised as a prime example of smart card best practice within a local government setting.
Brief
How the Solution Works
CardBASE’s unique card management solution MASCOT underpins this multi-application smart card, which facilitates residents young and old of the borough council to access a number of key council facilities and services such as libraries, leisure centres, schools and transport services.
This e+ card combines a number of different applications. Firstly the card contains an electronic purse, which cardholders can use to pay for library and leisure centre services, thus negating the need to carry money for each visit. It also contains a specialised electronic purse for schoolchildren who can use the card to purchase school meals, integrating with the Infineer system. Finally the e+ card also acts as a secure form of identity for all borough cardholder residents
Technical Partners
CardBASE worked with a number of key partners on this project, which required a high level of integration. CardBASE firstly integrated with Infineer, the official smart card provider of school meals throughout the UK by enabling Infineer cashless catering applications on the e+ card. Other key technical partners which CardBASE integrated with, included SirsiDynix who provide the digital library system and Clarity Commerce solutions who are responsible for delivering the leisure management and point of sale system.
MASCOT Product Solution
The MASCOT product solution is hosted off-site at a third party location running Microsoft Windows 2003 and using Oracle database technology. These other systems lower the cost of deployment yet enable superior operating performance.
